One of the reasons you may be hesitating to follow through with your plan to file for divorce is because you do not want to find yourself battling it out with your former spouse in a courtroom. Few people would blame you for wanting to end your marriage in a less adversarial fashion. Fortunately, you can.

Many couples have turned to mediation as a way to resolve their marital issues without the animosity and acrimony that often happens during a traditional courtroom proceeding. Using this alternative method of dispute resolution gives the parties the chance to retain control over the fate of their families in a more amicable forum. The key is that both of you must voluntarily enter into the process, which means you are willing to compromise and work together to reach a settlement.

Mediation before Court

In addition to lower costs and privacy, couples often find they can reach a satisfactory divorce settlement in much less time than it would take to adjudicate the matter in court. Doing so not only allows everyone to move forward with their lives faster but also gives the parties the incentive they may need in order to adhere to the agreement since they created it. Moreover, divorcing in a much less contentious fashion often helps parents work better together as co-parents post-divorce.

If you want to end your marriage in a more amicable way than going to court would offer, then you may want to consider mediation. More than likely, you still have questions and concerns before diving into the process. You may want to work with a divorce lawyer experienced in mediation to address any issues, protect your individual rights and ensure that you have access to sound advice throughout the process.
